Based on the physico-chemical analyses carried out on the Beatus de Saint-Sever (Paris, BnF latin 8878) by the Centre de recherche et de restauration des musées de France and the Centre de recherche sur la conservation du Muséum national d’histoire naturelle with the Fondation des Sciences du Patrimoine, this paper will show how the experimental sciences can shed light on the manufacturing processes of an illuminated manuscript from the 11th century. In particular, the pictorial techniques used, the pigments identified during the analyses and the organization of the work between the different artists of the manuscript will be discussed.
