Térence Le Deschault de Monredon, docteur en Histoire de l’Art
The figure of the knight holds a distinguished place in various manifestations of the Romanesque art. He is shown on all types of media and in various kinds of works. This proliferation of the figure of the noble warrior causes interpretation problems, because it refers to distant (though connected) realities: historical, literary, symbolic, etc. It is therefore necessary to distinguish different sorts of representations, contextualizing them in order to understand what message each of these images is carrying, knowing that the content of this message constantly oscillates between good and evil. Thus, chivalric values are opposed to warlike violence, the fight against the enemies of God are opposed to the condemnable depredations, and so on.
